A Round
With Sphere –a loving homage to Thelonious Sphere Monk.
Phoebe
– for trombonist/composer Homer Lambrecht, a dear friend whose music has
had a huge impact on us.
Phrenology
– how could something so goofy have been influential? Magical thinking has done more damage
to the planet and its inhabitants than we can calculate.
Chance,
Love, Logic - painter Robert
Motherwell posited that these are the immutable components of life. I think heÕs right.
Orange
– for artist Steve Richards.
Steve and I were talking about the way in which Mark RothkoÕs contrast
of colors and sense of balance ÒworksÓ not long before I wrote this.
Sudden
Deep Green of Summer - when winter lasts until summer begins.
Liner
– this had to do with me wanting to balance phrases of contrasting
shapes. It also has something to
do with the year 1988, when Kirby Puckett batted .356.
The
Cloisters – a place of spiritual seclusion. To my daughter Chloe Moriarty, seeker of such places.
