mixed feelings

The newest and awaited entry in tony the scribe’s ongoing series, mixed feelings follows two vastly different EPs (2016’s boom-bap mixed blood and 2018’s R&B mixed messages) in what should be called an artistic hat-trick. 

mixed feelings is an electronic chamber folk rap record honed during the pandemic dwelling on isolation, melancholy, and self-development. From the minimalist harps and synths of weak to the maximalist orchestration of dishes, the record finds tony playing with genre as never before, all while maintaining the high-concept writing that has become his calling card. 

tony the scribe is, above all else, a warrior monk. Sure, he’s also an award-winning songwriter, an experimental performance artist, and the last guest at your house party. But at the core, his life and work is built on discipline, a tension between deep internal knowledge and worldly projection, and a strict intentionality – every word, every note, suffused with purpose.

In the last few years, he’s directed a performance art installation with the Twin Cities darling Ananya Dance Theater, and won the 2020 Minnesota Emerging Composer Award from the American Composers’ Forum.
