Tomorrow’s Yesterday is the debut solo album from flutist/composer Gina Izzo, performing as ladyybirdd. Far from conventional, Tomorrow’s Yesterday is a personal exploration integrating original music by Izzo, improvisation and analog effects pedals, with the flute at the center. While a flute may seem an unlikely candidate for musical insurrection, ladyybirdd brings dynamic intensity and unrestricted adventure – a unique and compelling sonic tapestry, with brilliant contributions from her collaborators, which include all-star improvisers Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet), Erika Dohi (Juno synthesizer), Nick Dunston (bass), Ian David Rosenbaum (percussion), and Immanuel Wilkins (alto saxophone). The thirteen-track album will be released digitally and physically (CD) from Innova Recordings.
Says Izzo, “In an attempt to reshape direction, Tomorrow’s Yesterday explores the questions of how we can process painful memories but not let them overpower us and how we internalize, normalize, and manifest trauma – through an electronic and visual landscape.”
Tomorrow's Yesterday was engineered and produced by Joseph Branciforte at greyfade studios.
NY-based flutist Gina Izzo "rattles speakers and expectations with stop-time razzle, vocal (flute-talk) and electronic (phaser) effects" (NYC Jazz Record). Far from conventional, Izzo integrates improvisation and analog FX, with the flute at the center.
Recently, she has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, David Geffen Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, The Stone, Joe's Pub at The Public Theater, the Jazz Standard, National Sawdust, and the Bang on a Can Festival, among others.
Her solo project, ladyybirdd, which features original electro-acoustic music, has been described as "an absolute masterpiece in experimentation" (XuneMag) with "an unbridled sense of adventure, razor-sharp technique, and dynamic intensity" (Honk Magazine). In 2010 Gina co-founded RighteousGIRLS, with pianist Erika Dohi. The duo have received a 2023 Chamber Music America project grant, a 2016 New Music USA Impact Award, and whose debut album "gathering blue" received 4.5 stars in Downbeat Magazine.
Izzo is currently adjunct faculty at The New School, on the Board of Directors of the Willie Mae Rock Camp, and an ambassador for the Interlochen Center for the Arts and can be heard on Innova Recordings, Jagjaguwar, Nation Sawdust Tracks, Panoramic Records, and New Focus Recordings.
"Izzo deserves a bow for the innovative usage of her flute as the gravitational origin of such beautifully lush sonic clouds . . . 'Mirror(s)' features some of the most impressive solo flute improvising"
"the Wild West of solo flute music. Dizzying sonic layers spin kaleidoscopic narratives into an electrifying performance."
NIGHT AFTER NIGHT - ALBUM OF THE WEEK
"That range of technical methods and expressive modes suits Izzo’s original electroacoustic music, enhanced by her use of a Moogerfooger, looper, delay unit, and other electronic gadgets. Far from window dressing, the gear proves essential in crafting the dreamy meditations and dancefloor allusions Izzo evokes. And she never coasts; check out her razor-sharp rhythms and luscious melodies on “when we say goodbye,” a Konnakol-gone-New Age reverie.
Wilkins and Akinmusire play with affecting freedom and spirit in their spotlight features; Dohi, Dunston, and Rosenbaum are ideally supportive. One more essential teammate, engineer and producer Joseph Branciforte, keeps each detail and layer in sharp focus. And Izzo makes everything sing."
"improviser, explorer of her instrument . . . solo flute with electronics and improvisational parts that definitely fits into the new music electronic realm but she also has some stuff that’s very close to pure jazz and very good jazz"
