Almost nine years between recordings, and a lot has happened in my
life--another beautiful child, relocating to the midwest. New friends, strengthening
connections with old ones. Teaching my son to drive, teaching my
daughters to play. Watching my students become young adults while my own
teachers begin to retire. All of these experiences impact my music, but none
greater than the sudden loss of my parents--my mother in an automobile
accident, my father from cancer. While I was initially paralyzed by these
losses, life did continue, and eventually, the music did too. This CD comes out
of these experiences--it is about loss, it is about grieving, it is about
carrying on. It is also a celebration, an appreciation, and a thank-you.
I'd like to give special thanks to my incredible band--David, Vicky,
Pablo, Jonathan, Ashley, Todd and Michael; to my trusted collaborator Karen
Stokes and her beautiful dance company, who heard enough in my music to ask for
more; to Ashlee Busch, Adam Cuthbert, and Dan Rhode, who are constant reminders
of why I love to teach; to my brother John Ryan and sister Kate McMillan; to
David and Carolyn Anderson; to Kurt Ellenberger, Craig Boyd, Marc Mellits and Rob Smith; to Steve Swartz and DotDotDot Music; to the team at innova
Recordings; to Tim Darwish, Lynn Lane, Silas Brown,
Nate Bliton, and Andrew Russo.
My greatest thanks goes to my wife Kaarin
and our children Joshua, Anneli and Sofia. Their
continual encouragement and support are how I am able to do any of this.
